March has been officially designated by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) for the observance of Music In Our Schools Month® (MIOSM®), the time of year when music education becomes the focus of schools across the nation. MIOSM began as a single statewide celebration in 1973, and has grown over the decades to encompass a day, then a week, and then in 1985 to become a month long celebration of school music. The purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that schools is where all children should have access to music.  MIOSM is an opportunity for music teachers to bring their music programs to the attention of the school and the community, and to display the benefits that school music brings to students of all ages.

Gaines Academy Principal’s Challenge

When the 2014-2015 school year started Mrs. Wilke presented the students with a challenge. She challenged them to read 1,000,000 steps of reading practice for 100 Book Challenge. Mrs. Wilke told the students if they met the principal’s challenge she would do anything they wanted her to do. The students voted on several options such as sing karaoke, dress like a clown, and complete the Ice Bucket Challenge. In an almost unanimous decision, the students voted on the Ice Bucket Challenge to be their reward.

With the challenge accepted, and an exciting reward in place, the students got right to work. They read, and read, eventually earning 1,889, 715 steps collectively as a K-8 student body! Mrs. Wilke couldn’t have been prouder. She gladly accepted her fate to be soaked by ice and water in order to reward the students for their hard work and perseverance to not only meet their  reading goals, but to surpass them.

As she made her closing remarks at the end of the Ice bucket Challenge, Mrs. Wilke challenged the students to read 2,500,000 steps in the 2015-2016 school year. We can’t wait to see how she rewards the students for reaching (and surely surpassing) that reading goal!!

Hello to all the Samuel Gaines Academy Summer Scholars. Students in grades kindergarten through 7th grade received a Summer Scholar Sac at the awards ceremony on June 1st.

Parents, please go over the program materials with your children. Students received a free book and a form to write a book review when they finish reading their book. Students who bring the book review back to school in August will be invited to an ice cream social where they will get to share their book review with other students while enjoying a sweet treat.

Also included in the materials are 100 Book Challenge Reading logs to be completed by the parents and student to document students’ reading minutes over the summer. We hope every student reads at least 30 minutes a day which will earn them 2 steps. The steps earned over the summer will be credited to your students’ reading record in August. Students can earn 148 steps if they read for 30 minutes each day of summer. Remember to visit one of the public library branches near you to check out books, DVDs or use their computers.

Students who will be in grades 1-5 should also practice their High- Frequency Words and complete a fun math activity each day. Parents should remember to initial each activity your child completes. Extra school supplies will be given to students who complete the activities and return the forms in August.

Lastly, try some of the fun educations APPS suggested on the Samuel Gaines Summer Scholars flyer.
